What is a PvP game?

Before we dive into details, we should discuss the definition first. What is PvP to start with? It’s an abbreviation for Player versus Player – gamers compete with each other rather than against AI-controlled bots. The term can refer to online multiplayer games which let gamers see who’s better, focusing their gameplay on this aspect. It’s also possible to blend it with PvE elements (Player versus Environment), mixing player duels with characters and creatures controlled by the computer. 

Naturally, the developer of such titles must provide players with impeccable, logical gameplay. The skill is what decides about winning, not a random bug you were so unfortunate to stumble upon. 

The example of MMORPGs offers an apparent distinction between these two: usually, you’re wandering through a game’s world, exploring it, and gathering experience points from NPC battles. Most contemporary PC titles implemented methods of avoiding PvP battles – not everyone likes them, especially when you fall victim to ranking. 

It’s a form of bullying in a way, as when your character is defeated in one place, the other player(s) beat you as soon as you respawn and effectively block you. You can probably imagine how annoying it is. The way you can signalize that you don’t want to duel other players may be different, depending on the game. Sometimes, you turn off the option, and you’re basically untouchable, and sometimes, you have to switch to a PvE server. Either way, once you decide to engage in combat, you will experience the PvP meaning first-hand. 

Online and offline PvP

Internet access is something most of us probably can’t imagine our lives without. However, it’s not impossible to organize an offline gaming session with your friends, and there are numerous ways to do so! You can either play some of the titles using the good old split-screen or create a local area network (LAN) to have your friends or family join you in a game from other devices. Both aren’t overly difficult to set up and help you arrange everything effectively without being online.

It’s definitely a field where you can always find someone willing to play with you, provided you’d prefer to play with others via the Internet. You should gather at least a couple of players who’d want to join if you decide to play some online PvP games. Online gaming has the advantage of accessibility over offline methods. Even if your team can’t make it to a match this time, someone over the Internet surely will!

The approach to the game itself may also change. Although some people have competitiveness in their nature, casual plays with your pals aren’t usually as serious as competing against people you don’t know, especially when we’re talking about the ranked matches. A friendly duel with a mate is something you do at a party and don’t think about it too much, but a lost game with someone you wanted to prove your ability hurts a bit more. Still, enjoying video games should be the primary goal for us all. 

Best PvP games on PC

Now that we know a bit more about PvP games, it’s high time to name some examples of good PC titles that will allow you to experience Player versus Player at its best. The first game we recommend checking out is Final Fantasy XIV Online. It’s one of the most popular (for good reasons) MMORPGs on the market – you basically experience a regular FF title here: an engaging storyline, thrilling combat, and the living, dangerous world that begs to be explored. The player fights system is also fair: once you enter an area where you can duel characters controlled by other players, you all have equal chances of winning. The PvP online mode applied in the game makes sense and only encourages you to duel frequently.

On a similar note, you can see if you can become the King of Games with Duel Links – an online free card game based on the Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game. Instead of the usual five fields where you can place your monsters and other cards, you have 3 for each. It makes dueling much faster than in the TCG format, and it also doesn’t require big decks to start with.
